Passwordless Remote Access to Windows Servers and Desktop

During my time as a penetration tester, I’ve seen many IT teams storing server catalogs with respective IP addresses and passwords in a sharable Excel sheet. This is more so true in windows server infrastructure as many organizations resort to password-based auth for local and remote access. Of course, security-conscious organizations would use a password vault. But in any case, password storage in any form is often an Achilles heel in infrastructure security. While there are endless risks associated with password-based authentication, passwords also create an operational overhead for system administrators. Maintaining password vaults to share, store, and rotate passwords can lead to infrastructure compromises.

Windows Remote Desktop Protocol

Just as the GUI is a primary interface for Windows on desktops, the GUI is also preferred for remote access to Windows servers. The most popular and default remote access protocol for Windows is Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). RDP is a multi-channel communication protocol designed to transfer user input, graphics, and custom data between client and server.

To understand how RDP works, consider a scenario where a user is trying to access a remote server. In a nutshell, after successful user authentication, the client and server’s display size, language, and hardware configurations are exchanged and negotiated. Next, the graphical display of the remote server is continuously captured and streamed to the user’s computer. Finally, the user’s input, like keyboard and mouse, is captured and forwarded to the remote server, where the inputs are executed.

What’s wrong with RDP?

RDP is efficient and probably the fastest GUI-based remote access protocol despite the additional overhead of graphical transports, audio, video, and hardware port redirections. In fact, every remote desktop access solution keeps RDP as a benchmark. The problems, however, are related to the security, and specifically, secure management of remote access via RDP and the attack surface of RDP client and server implementation.

Let’s explore a few security shortcomings below:

Weak access control features

RDP is a remote access protocol, and as such, implementation of modern access control features such as SSO and multi-factor authentication are left to the administrator.

Trust on first use (TOFU)

By default, the RDP server is configured with a self-signed certificate. During the first RDP connection between client and server, the client needs to trust the server to establish an encrypted connection. Trusting this certificate is like trusting HTTPS warnings in the browser. Trusting certificates issued by unknown issuers poses risks of man-in-the-middle attacks. TOFU practices also build insecure habits amongst users to ignore security warnings.

Wide attack surface

Feature-rich graphical streaming with audio, video, and hardware redirections, fast data transfer, and efficient data consumption — RDP is a complex protocol. The sheer amount of features mean RDP client and server implementations carry a wide attack surface. Further, as a desktop application, RDP clients are prone to malware attacks via desktop compromise and in-memory exploitation.

How Remoteler Desktop Access for Windows works

Users access Windows servers via the Remoteler Web UI, which speaks to the access proxy over a WebSocket using Remoteler Desktop Protocol. The Remoteler Access Proxy performs necessary RBAC screening and, upon successful request validation, forwards the request to Remoteler Windows Desktop Service. The Windows Desktop Service translates the Remoteler Desktop Protocol into native Remote Desktop Protocol, generates a short-lived certificate for the user, and authenticates to the remote windows server using a certificate via smart card emulator creating a passwordless experience for the user. No extra software is required!

Remoteler Desktop Protocol

In order to reduce the attack surface and allow users to access Windows servers with minimal extra software dependencies, our engineering team decided on a solution that lets users access remote Windows servers from the web browser. But web browsers have different API sets to draw UIs, and HTTP is not designed to stream real-time data; we needed a way to transform native RDP into an HTTP and browser compatible protocol. So to solve this, our team designed a lightweight bi-directional message-oriented protocol, Remoteler Desktop Protocol that communicates over Websockets and TLS. Graphical displays of the server are converted to PNG frames and sent to the client, which is then rendered in the browser using canvas API.

Remoteler Desktop Protocol has a client and server implementation where the server is responsible for transforming to and from native RDP into Remoteler Desktop Protocol and sending it to the client. The Remoteler Desktop Protocol client is responsible for drawing the canvas based on PNG frames and sending the user’s mouse and keyboard to the Remoteler Desktop Protocol server.

In-browser rendering of remote desktop

The Remoteler Web UI implements the Remoteler Desktop Protocol client. Since the Remoteler Desktop Protocol server sends remote displays as PNG frames to the Remoteler Desktop Protocol client, the Remoteler Desktop Protocol client needs to draw PNGs as an HTML canvas continuously. In addition, the Remoteler Desktop Protocol client is also responsible for capturing user inputs such as keyboard and mouse inputs and sending them to the Remoteler Desktop Protocol server over a WebSocket.

Remoteler Desktop Service

The two primary functions of the Remoteler Desktop Service are conversion to and from native RDP to Remoteler Desktop Protocol and handling certificate-based authentication for RDP. The Remoteler Desktop Service implements the Remoteler Desktop Protocol server, the RDP client, and a smart card emulator for RDP authentication.

Certificates and smart cards

The authentication layer handled by the Remoteler Desktop Service is based on ephemeral certificates that are passed as a smart card via a virtual smart card emulator. In fact, this capability allows Remoteler to offer certificate-based access to remote desktops with a full passwordless experience to users.

Security wins with Remoteler Desktop Access

Certificate-based authentication

While the majority of Linux server management has moved to keys or certificate-based remote access (SSH with certs), the Windows world predominantly uses password-based authentication. Nonetheless, the implementation of certificate-based authentication is also not a simple task. Managing a Certificate Authority and correctly handling certificate issuing is a challenging and sensitive task and may not be operationally feasible for small teams. This is where Remoteler’s built-in certificate management and authentication system helps migration to better certificate-based authentication methods with the least operational overhead.

Safety from RDP client exploits

Since Remoteler allows desktop access from a web browser, there is no requirement for an additional native RDP client. This eliminates risks from targeted client-side exploits that include memory-based exploitation or compromised hosts.

Avoid risks of credential phishing

Although Web applications have a safety advantage over regular native desktop applications, web applications also have their own sets of vulnerabilities. One of the significant risks of browser-based remote access solutions is that they are susceptible to credential phishing attacks. Since Remoteler Desktop Access offers passwordless access to remote desktops, Remoteler for Remote Desktop Access eliminates the risks of credential phishing.

Streamlined desktop protocol

The advantage of implementing our own desktop protocol means we were able to implement just enough capabilities to support desktop access, discarding all the legacy bloat that existing remote desktop protocols carry. This reduced complexity means a smaller footprint and less attack surface.
