SSH Hardening Tips to Prevent Brute-Force Attacks

SSH servers are a common target for brute-force attacks. This is even more true if your infrastructure sits behind an SSH bastion because attackers have no choice but to compromise the bastion host either by exploitation or denial of service. In this article, we will list a few controls which will help you harden your SSH servers from brute-force attacks.

Limit the number of authentication attempts

One of the simplest ways to mitigate brute force attacks is to reduce the number of authentication attempts permitted by a connection. We can do this by reducing the value of the MaxTries variable in the sshd_config file from its default of 6.

Before deciding on an appropriate value for MaxTries, you should understand what constitutes an authentication attempt. For example, each of the following counts as an attempt to authenticate:

  • Validating an SSH key offered by a client
  • Determining if the client can authenticate with Kerberos (GSSAPI) authentication if it is enabled
  • Entering a password once

This list suggests that if you set MaxTries to a low number, you could use all of your authentication attempts before being prompted to enter a password. Setting MaxTries to 3 is a good starting point.

Implement brute-force protection such as Fail2ban

There are several possible solutions for protecting against Denial of Service (DoS) and other scripted attacks. A popular solution is DenyHosts, but we prefer Fail2ban because of its flexibility.

Fail2ban works using configuration files called jails, each comprising a filter and a set of actions. The filter is a regular expression that searches your server logs for failed login attempts or other suspicious activity. If the filter detects something concerning, it can invoke one or more actions. Potential actions can include blocking a suspicious IP address for a defined period or sending an email notification to your server admin.

Configuring Fail2ban can be a bit fussy, but there are many practical examples in the documentation to get you started.

Use TCP wrappers to limit access to specific hosts

A great way to protect your servers from unauthorized remote access is to define which client machines can connect using SSH explicitly. You can use TCP wrappers for this. TCP wrappers restrict access to TCP services based on criteria such as IP address or hostname. The libwrap library supports TCP wrappers in SSH.

TCP wrappers use the hosts.allow and hosts.deny files to determine if a client has permission to connect to TCP services. If these files are empty or not present, then any client can access the TCP service. After that point, only the firewall can block the client.

The most secure approach is to first deny all hosts in the /etc/hosts.deny file:

And then to configure all hosts and domains that can connect to SSH in the /etc/hosts.allow file:

Implement two-factor authentication

Nothing beats the simplicity and effectiveness of adding two-factor authentication, and it covers a range of security requirements including prevention from brute-force attacks. Google Authenticator is a widely used two-factor authentication solution. To enforce 2FA on your SSH connections using Google Authenticator, follow these steps.

First, install the Google Authenticator PAM module using your package manager. For example, using apt:

Then, configure SSH to use the Authenticator by adding the following line to the /etc/pam.d/sshd file:

Next, restart the sshd service:

Then, edit the sshd_config file by changing the ChallengeResponseAuthentication variable from no to yes.

The command displays a QR code and secret key. You can use either to set up Google Authenticator. Click the plus button in the Google Authenticator app to begin the process.
